This is what I made my little brother in lieu of getting him a birthday card. It’s good to be my sibling.
Today was fun. I had the opportunity to make up a project on the day of for one of my classes, and I decided to have some fun with it. I’m always trying to tell my students that art is fun and it’s about mistakes - it’s about embracing what makes what you are creating different from what everyone else is doing. That’s a hard concept for most people to get, but especially kids. So I really didn’t expect much to come out of a class with what I thought was a simple project. But I was surprised.
My first idea for the mugs was too hard, I wanted the kids to make a gradient of the yellow and orange. It didn’t work on the sample I tried to make myself. So I went with my next idea. I had the kids throw paint at their mugs, Jackson Pollack style. Boy, did we make a mess - but I have never had the kids get so into what they’re making and have so much fun! They even helped me clean up!
My apologies to the school custodian, but I would not do this class differently. The kids loved it and many of them, including the ones that have taken my class repeatedly, told me it was the most fun they’d ever had.
I hope they’ll remember today when they think about art in the future and remember it can be fun.
Someone requested a post of all of the current Strong Female Characters, so here you go.

In heaven, aka Cinefile Video
I really need to go to this store…I miss my days at Suncoast knowing more about movies than the average 15 year old should.
