Films are subjective, what you like, what you don’t like. But the thing for me that is absolutely unifying is the idea that every time I go to the cinema and pay my money and sit down and watch a film go up on-screen, I want to feel that the people who made that film think it’s the best movie in the world, that they poured everything into it and they really love it. Whether or not I agree with what they’ve done I want that effort there, I want that sincerity. And when you don’t feel it, that’s the only time I feel like I’m wasting my time at the movies ─ Christopher Nolan

This is what I made my little brother in lieu of getting him a birthday card. It’s good to be my sibling.
Vulture made a custom Arrested Development emoji set; if only this was real.
If I could download this for my iphone I totally would.
I switched my OK Cupid location back to Los Angeles for the Hell of it and it’s making me think that I may have screwed up my life profoundly by leaving. (via raptoravatar)
Moral of the story: Don’t leave LA or you’ll never date anyone cool again.

Today was fun. I had the opportunity to make up a project on the day of for one of my classes, and I decided to have some fun with it. I’m always trying to tell my students that art is fun and it’s about mistakes - it’s about embracing what makes what you are creating different from what everyone else is doing. That’s a hard concept for most people to get, but especially kids. So I really didn’t expect much to come out of a class with what I thought was a simple project. But I was surprised.
My first idea for the mugs was too hard, I wanted the kids to make a gradient of the yellow and orange. It didn’t work on the sample I tried to make myself. So I went with my next idea. I had the kids throw paint at their mugs, Jackson Pollack style. Boy, did we make a mess - but I have never had the kids get so into what they’re making and have so much fun! They even helped me clean up!
My apologies to the school custodian, but I would not do this class differently. The kids loved it and many of them, including the ones that have taken my class repeatedly, told me it was the most fun they’d ever had.
I hope they’ll remember today when they think about art in the future and remember it can be fun.
“My L.A. is very bright, hot, colorful, and a little rough around the edges. It’s far away from everything, but right next to everything at the same time.”
The messy chaos of Los Angeles can be charming. Or disorienting. Or a bit of both! Office hours with Chris & Lyra of Overdrive’s curatorial team continue tomorrow,12-1pm and Thursday, 2-3pm at the entrance to the exhibition at the Getty Center.
